Movie Night Information
Is your PTA planning a family movie night? If so, we have all the information you’ll need to comply with Federal Copyright Laws. When a movie is shown on a public site (all schools are public sites) the organizers of the event must obtain a license to do so. That license can be applied for at Movie Licensing USA in St. Louis MO. They are the sole K-12 licensing agent for most major movie studios. There are two types of licenses; a one time showing and an annual license. You can designate the start date of the annual license to coincide with PTA’s fiscal year.
While investigating this topic, it was found that there are several myths that need to be dispelled. The first is that if you don’t charge admission you are not in violation of any laws. Not True. In fact, with this license, you actually may charge an admission to cover the cost of the event (not to make a profit). The second is that if you show a movie to less than 15 people, 10 people, etc… you are not in violation of any laws. Not True. Another is that if the movie is rated G you are not in violation of any laws. Not True.
It seems to be a very easy process, they only need about 1-2 weeks of lead time and everyone we have spoken to is very helpful. To get started, please call them directly at 1-877-321-1300.

By complying with the Federal Copyright Laws you preserve the integrity and reputation of your members, your unit, and the PTA persona; not to mention your pocketbooks. Please use this information to protect yourselves.
